The Idea – We Need Sleep I introduced the Homeostatic Lifestyle in my March 23, 2019 article. The Homeostatic Lifestyle is based on applying physical homeostasis and behavioral homeostasis to a lifestyle that promotes good health the way nature intended. The Homeostatic Lifestyle focuses on five behaviors that promote homeostasis. These are Rejuvenating Sleep, Bioavailable Eating and Hydration, Freeing Fitness, Positive Mental Outlook and Stress Reduction, and Success Planning. This article will focus on Rejuvenating Sleep. Sleep is arguably the foundation of good health. Why We Sleep Sleep is governed by sleep/wake homeostasis and the circadian biological clock. Sleep/wake homeostasis tells us when we need to sleep and keeps us sleep a sufficient time to restore our bodies for the next day. The circadian biological clock regulates the timing of sleep, with some times of the day being stronger sleep drivers than other times. According to the CDC, one third of adults responding to their survey reported sleep deficiency. Good sleep promotes good mental health, physical health and performance of daily tasks. How to Get Rejuvenating Sleep and Live the Homeostatic Lifestyle The Sleep Foundation recommends the following actions to obtain a good night sleep:
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) provides recommendations on hours we should sleep which are also endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Sleep loss adds up. Total sleep lost is called sleep debt. If you lose 1hour of sleep each night, you'll have a sleep debt of 7 hours after a week. You may nap to not feel sleepy, but naps will not let you “catch up” on sleep nor obtain the benefits of rejuvenating sleep. However, you can recover over time by returning to a regular seep schedule. That’s time to “catch up” could be days or weeks depending on many factors. Take these steps and you will be on the road to living The Homeostatic Lifestyle. Learn more about sleep here. How Does Sleep Fit To the Homeostatic Lifestyle? The Homeostatic Lifestyle focuses on four additional behaviors that promote homeostasis and leads to good health. Obtaining a rejuvenating sleep is number one. Sleep deficiency has a direct impact on the other four behaviors.
